TO KNOW CHRIST BETTER AND MAKE CHRIST BETTER KNOWN

OUR MISSION STATEMENT IS

WELCOMING YOU TO ST JOHN THE EVANGELIST WARLEY

The present church building was completed in 1878 and serves the Parish of Warley overlooking the Calder Valley in the Pennine hills about three miles from Halifax town centre. The Parish covers parts of Trimmingham and Willowfield also Cote Hill and the north side of Burnley Road down to Friendly, Warley Wood on to John Naylor Lane.  Then the Parish goes up to Warley and Newlands right up to Norton Tower and then drops down though part of Highroad Well.

The Parish of St John the Evangelist has some of the finest views in the country over the Pennine villages of Calderdale and is mostly urban with some rural farming area to the west. There is one school in the Parish, Warley Town Primary School. There are also a few public houses which serve food and a Post Office and general store at Highroad Well.

Benefice of St John, Warley & St Hilda, Halifax

Sunday 5th March 2023

When we are gathered each Sunday at St Hilda’s church for worship and we enjoy the many gifts and talents of the worship leaders, musicians and choir, it is hard to imagine that there may be challenges behind the scenes in maintaining the  church within the community that it is set in.

However, before  the pandemic, some  members of the PCC felt that it was time to step down as the demands of all that they were doing were starting to feel a bit much. Time and the pandemic has also not helped and many of the remaining (diminished) PCC  have felt the pressures and demands of their role are now also too much for them.

During the pandemic, the PCC started to have conversations with the Diocese about the way forward with depleted Human Resources for running and maintaining the church. After much prayer and discernment it was decided, with a heavy heart, that the PCC would explore a new way forwards.

Today I have an announcement to make that invites everyone here and the wider community to be part of that consultation and to have the opportunity to influence the outcome of these proposals.

I want to stress that the PCC members have shown great courage and integrity in opening this conversation and I thank them for that. It is not their decision to make alone. We all have an opportunity to have our say. Journeying to this has been a heavy cross to bear. We are all saddened that we have come to this place.

I want to assure you that, in the midst of this, the parish will not be forsaken. During the pandemic I very much had the mantra that “nobody gets left behind”. I undertake to still be here for St Hilda’s church family and its parish area as it discovers its new way of being church and continues to be the loving church family that it is. Much work has already gone on behind the scenes to ensure continuity of pastoral provision including visiting, home communions and food vouchers for families in need. It makes sense for St Johns to welcome their parish and those that wish to transfer as there are already many friendships and collaborations between both churches. We will also work with our neighbours to provide local and accessible worship for those who would find it difficult to travel elsewhere for church services – for example, services taking place within the nursing homes.

I also want to stress that this is not a decision to close the door and leave the place empty. It is our hope and prayer that this wonderful building will continue to be a blessing to the community for many years to come. It cannot become a shop or a place of worship / teaching for those of other faiths. It can, however, continue to be a blessing to those it was built to serve.

In the meantime, please keep our brothers and sisters at St Hilda’s in your prayers during this painful time. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
